My Take: Panthers 2008 Draft
After what seems like 100 hours, the NFL Draft is finished. Here is my take on the Panther's largely stinky 2008 NFL Draft.
RD 1 (13) JONATHAN STEWART, RB Oregon
Stewart's pretty good, though plagued by dumb injuries (Toe surgery? Give me a break). Like I said before, I saw him on Sportscenter and the guys a muscle. He's little but strong, and will be a good compliment to DeAngelo Williams, who is a jumpy little bastard. We needed a RB, so I guess I like this pick ok.
RD 1 (19) JEFF OTAH, OT Pitt
Again, I understand that the Panthers need O-line guys, but we gave up 2 late round picks and our first round 2009 pick for him. And he played for Pitt. I don't care who you are, you're not worth that. I realize that there was a run on OTs, and the Panthers worried that there would be nobody left by the time they got to pick again, but this is a bust waiting to happen. And we still don't have a QB.
RD 3 (67) CHARLES GODFREY, CB Iowa
Don't know too much about him, but ESPN says that he has trouble with man coverage, but that he's a "playmaker" so I guess we have a couple years of watching him make DeAngelo Hall "risk the TD for the chance at an INT" plays. I'm really skeptical of CBs drafted high, but this isn't high, so maybe the front office guys see something in him. Let's hope.
RD 3 (74) DAN CONNOR, LB Penn State.
I like this guy, simply because he's a smart LB who can play in space inside. He strikes me as an intelligent player, which would be nice considering he'll take the slot for Dan Morgan, who might be the dumbest motherfucker to ever live. Hopefully, Beasley's success will rub off on him and we'll bolster up our LB corp.
RD 5 (141) GARY BARNIDGE, TE Louisville
No idea about him. But fuck him twice, because he was on the Louisville team that beat Wake Forest in the 2007 Orange Bowl.
RD 6 (181) NICK HAYDEN, DT Wisconsin
Defensive lineman who likely won't make a splash next year. I hope they drafted him just to follow Julius Peppers around, kicking him in the ass, saying "What the fuck is wrong with you, dummy? Play better!"
RD 7 (221) HILEE TAYLOR, OLB North Carolina
Since everyone knows UNC is a football school, I'm doing cartwheels in the street that the Panthers took this guy. Though at this pick, his contract will look something like $75 a year with $15.43 guaranteed and a 1987 Toyota Camry as a production incentive.
RD 7 (241) GEOFF SCHWARTZ, OT Oregon
Jonathan Stewart will be happy running behind an ass that he recognizes, I guess. At this point in the draft, you have to have faith that your team has personnel that can recognize underrated talent, and I don't have that faith in the Panthers.
RD 7 (250) MACKENZY BERNADEAU, OG Bentley
I know your first question, and after a quick Google, I can tell you that Bentley is a school of 4,000 undergrads located 10 miles outside Boston and is ranked #30 in Businessweeks Top 100 undergrad business schools. So this guy is probably a bang-up football player. Playing for crowds upwards of 200 can only breed you for the bigtime Sunday game.
So thats the Panthers 2008 Draft. We still don't have another QB. Let's cross our fingers and hope that Delhomme's tommy john surgery doesn't affect him. God knows Matt Moore is crossing his, hoping that he doesn't have to play. Carolina doesn't fuck around with QBs that don't perform (ask David Carr). We filled holes at OL, DL, and RB, and might have a DB to work with. Not a sexy draft, but maybe ok. I'd give it a C. Up next: Panthers finish season 8-8, miss playoffs, and the 2009 Draft is captained by new Panthers skipper Bill Cowher. You heard it here first, folks.
